Nick darcy fronts media after final olympic appeal for support, including criticism of his fitness
After a tough series of results last season, including a 0-16 start to the Rio 2016 Olympics, the USMNT have shown a remarkable improvement, and have made some surprising advances to a fourth-place finish in the FIFA U-17 World Cup standings.
The United States was beaten by Colombia 3-2 in a thrilling encounter in Rio's Parque Do Maracan on Tuesday, just minutes before the opening game of the U-17 World Cup, a match that saw the national team earn an incredible win in front of a record-breaking crowd of 21,631 at Estadio Maracan.
However, after the match, US manager Jurgen Klinsmann confirmed that his players would not have any excuses after the defeat.
"We are committed," Klinsmann said in the US men's press conference at the start of pre-tournament training. "We are going to put the effort into our game today and we will see where that takes us tomorrow and next week. We know that today was disappointing but it's the best thing that can happen to us. We just need to focus on the next game and see what happens tomorrow.
"We're not going to change anything in the game. We've got to keep improving."
Klinsmann went on to give a detailed assessment of some of the team's players and their overall performance over the season, as well as the role the younger players are playing.
The USMNT now sit in a close sixth place, in first in the tournament with five points while a host of players have appeared in 20 matches across nine competitions this campaign €“ although only one player was rested for the clash with Ecuador, and two are unavailable due to injuries.
Despite their excellent start, the US women won four games in a row, but have not been able to avoid falling a place away from the group stage.
The Americans had the best defence in Brazil this tournament, but were beaten 3-0 at the Estadio Municipal de Bahia in Salvador, and ended the tournament on a low note when they lost 2-0 to Argentina at home.
After the game, Klinsmann said that there will always be "some criticism" over the team's performances, but added that the success in Brazil was due to "an outstanding coaching staff.
"That is the reason why they made some amazing additions," Klinsmann said. "Injuries are part of life, you can't get enough of it in sports. Every man and every player needs to work hard and train hard for this kind of victory.
